The Church Family
Peace Lutheran Church is a small, modest, friendly congregation comprised of multi-generational
families as well as new young families. Our members live in the City of Port Clinton and in the
nearby communities of Oak Harbor, Catawba and Marblehead. We enjoy being together socially, as
well as spiritually. Blessed with an abundance of surrounding property, we recently created
“Peace Park”, complete with a large barbeque pit used for gala picnics and other celebrations.
Worship and Music
Our weekly Worship Services are held at 9:00AM Sunday mornings, November - February. (Average attendance 50 to 75)
Mid-week Services are also conducted during Lent. Holy Communion is offered on the
first and third Sundays of the month as well as on church festivals. Our Pastor teaches both
Catechism and Confirmation classes, usually on Wednesday evening. Adult bible study is
Wednesday at 10:30AM and two women’s Circle groups meet monthly. Our Women of the Church
organization meets several times each year and holds numerous annual events/fund raisers.
Peace is often referred to as “the friendliest church in town” and is also well known as the
“congregation that loves to sing”. We have a small but mighty church choir, which rehearses on
Thursday evenings and sings twice each month.
We share two accomplished organists/keyboard
players with other churches on a regularly scheduled basis. Our sound technician has recently
recorded the entire liturgy and many hymns so that we are able to conduct services even if an
organist is not available.
We have a youth Bell Choir, which performs several times each year, and we also host an annual
ecumenical Bell Concert. We enjoy both traditional and more modern music including spiritual and
ethnic works. We are very much interested in developing an alternate Praise Service.
Outreach
Our Fellowship Hall is used by several community organizations including the National Association
of Retired Federal Employees, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the Quilters Guild. The Women of the
Church provide bereavement meals upon request. We participate with and/or contribute to: Via
DiCristo alums, Firelands Food Pantry, Cherry Street Mission, Holiday Bureau, Lutheran World
Relief, County Mental Health Assoc., Ruth Ann’s House (abused women and children), Heifer Fund,
Quilts to Veterans, Children’s Hospital and the Linus Project, Joyful Connections (common meeting
place for divorced couples to exchange children), LOMO, Ecumenical Gathering Meals, Holiday
Bureau, Christmas Mitten Tree, Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, sister church in Tanzania, Seminary,
Luther Home.
Christian Education
We believe that Christian Education is from “Birth to Grave”. Our Sunday School, (10 am year
round - Pre K through
adult), has many talented leaders working together to keep the program relevant to our
congregation’s needs. Our young people’s curriculum is based on a rotation model emphasizing
selected Bible stories. (Average attendance 15 to 25) A well-attended adult Sunday School class
is under the direction of our Education Chairman, assisted from time to time by various leaders from the
congregation. We have an established Senior ELMS Youth group, and a planned "Junior ELMS Youth"
group.

Our Place
Peace
Lutheran Church is located in the heart of the community, directly across the street
from Port Clinton High School. Our sanctuary is of a more modern design and features
three massive wooden crosses outside, just in front of the church.
The attached
Fellowship Hall, kitchen, library and choir room are used on a regular basis. All are
fully handicapped accessible. In addition to Peace Park and the surrounding
well-groomed lawns, our church is proud of its 35 Peace Rose bushes lovingly tended
by dedicated volunteers. |

Our Community
Port Clinton is a highly desirable place in which to live situated on the shores of Lake Erie in
what is often referred to as “Ohio’s Vacationland”. Off shore islands are a major boater’s
destination, and the fishing is exceptional! Seven state parks within the county attract
thousands of campers. Nearby Cedar Point Amusement Park is well known for quality family
entertainment. The scenic beauty of the area attracts numerous artists and other cultural
pursuits. Good schools and proximity to the cities of Toledo, (30 miles west) and Cleveland (80
miles east) provide bountiful educational and medical opportunities. Like many other industrial
based counties in the state ours has seen an economic downturn, somewhat offset by our number one
industry.. tourism.
Our History
Peace Church was founded in 1895, when a small group of Lutherans broke away from the larger St.
John’s Lutheran, (Still in existence) to continue conducting Services in German. The little white
frame church they built now houses the Church of the Nazarene. In 1967 property was purchased at
the present location. The Fellowship Hall was built, and the nearby parsonage was purchased.
After ten years of Services in the Fellowship Hall, seated on folding chairs, the congregation
had saved enough money to embark on a campaign to build a sanctuary. Its unique design,
“thrusting skyward” with a massive wooden beam, was intended to make Peace Church a highly
visible part of the community it would serve. |
